The Illinois Department of Security (“IDES”) has seen a spike in fake unemployment claims and many of us have been victims lately. Claims filed fraudulently in another’s name cause a major strain to the system and damage the credit of the victim. If you suspect a fraudulent claim in your name, contact IDES to report the imposter claim by phone at (800) 814-0513. You should leave a message with IDES. Please note that due to the large volume of these fraudulent claims, IDES may take 2-3 weeks to contact you about the claim.
Even if you don't suspect that you may be a victim of a fraudulent unemployment claim, you should monitor your credit report on a regular basis. You are entitled to a free credit report annually from each of the three nationwide credit reporting companies. Order online from annualcreditreport.com or call 1-877-322-8228. You will need to provide your name, address, social security number, and date of birth to verify your identity. Also, many banks have services to monitor your credit rating.
