The metal recycling firm General Iron, located on Cortland and Marcey along the Chicago River shut down operations last week. The operator had an agreement with the city in 2019 to shut down operations after it officially merged with an existing metal recycler RMG in 2018. General Iron must decommission and demolish its plant and remove materials and equipment.
The site can provide an open space opportunity for the City that residents and businesses have been striving to accomplish from the beginning of the community Framework Plan. It opens the possibility for something like the North Branch Park and Preserve to obtain public open space for future generations.
